Senior Linux Systems Administrator

 

My client has an immediate need for an experienced Senior Linux System Administrator, who has previous experience of highly-available systems in a production environment. The ability to proactively and reactively triage and resolve issues, as well as providing feedback to ensure future system stability is essential.  The applicant must be able to demonstrate good project and time management skills as well as excellent written and verbal skills.

 

Role Definition

A Senior Linux System Administrator is required to join the existing System Administration team of a rapidly expanding business providing mobile network solutions within the transportation sector in global markets.  The candidate will be reporting directly to the Team Leader of the System Administration Team.

 

This role requires an individual with extensive Linux administration and troubleshooting experience within a red-hat based environment as well as a good level of networking.  You will undertake analysis and diagnosis of problems providing recommendations and implementing corrective solutions. Due to the nature of the role you will require excellent communication, planning and co-ordination skills.  You will be expected to function well as both an independent problem solver and a team player.

 

As a senior member of staff you will be expected to take a lead role in the design and implementation of systems requiring a high level of understanding across a broad range of infrastructure and technologies.  You will also be expected to demonstrate high technical standards, project leadership and organisational skills.  Duties will include mentoring of team members and acting as a deputy when the Team Leader is not present.

 

The candidate should possess strong knowledge of the Linux operating system, server and storage infrastructure products, virtualisation technologies and have some understanding of switched and routed networks preferably using Cisco technologies.
 

Responsibilities will include design, testing and validation of the design, implementation, technical documentation using Visio and related documentation tools and on-going operational support and maintenance.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Ability to diagnose faults and offer solutions across a broad range of IT and communication systems with an emphasis on Linux environments, Virtualisation and Cisco networking equipment
  • Design, implement and support highly available complex Linux based solutions in diverse system environments
  • Building, hardening and implementing Linux systems
  • Planning and developing new systems to meet customer requirements
  • Analysing and implementing security policies and best practices
  • IP network configuration
  • Performance tuning, usage trending and analysis for pre-emptive maintenance and growth of systems
  • Using appropriate tools provide 24x7 system monitoring of all systems and services
  • Where appropriate create documentation for both internal and external use
  • Adhere to all system audit requirements as appropriate
  • Domain name maintenance
  • Troubleshooting application issues
  • Implement automation and logging systems
  • Backup solutions and disaster recovery
  • Managing the ordering of equipment and managing stock supplies
  • Raising and controlling of PO’s for new projects and trials as required
  • Work with the sales and project teams to design solutions at both the pre and post sales stages
  • Configure and implement equipment to match the project objectives
  • Build test specifications and undertake test cycles
  • Troubleshoot and offer 3rd line support to other business divisions and customers
  • Liaise with manufacturers to resolve hardware and software issues
  • Develop standard test plans and document the results
  • To Adhere to strict customer change control procedures
